National Children Science Congress 2018 - Report on State Level Training Workshop for District Coordinators and Resource Teachers

One day State Level Training Workshop for District Coordinators and Resource Teachers under National Children Science Congress-2018 was organized by Chhattisgarh Council of Science & Technology in association with  Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University, Raipur at School of Studies in Biotechnology, Pt. RavishankarShukla University, Raipur, Chhattisgarh on 19th September 2018 to make aware the district coordinators and resource teachers who came from various districts to the focal theme and subthemes of National Children Science Congress 2018 andto disseminate the information of the project methodology, evaluation guidelines and mentoring procedures through the Master Trainers and Resource Persons who participated in the Regional Orientation workshop held from 31st July to 02nd August 2018 at Raipur. National Children Science Congressis supported and catalysed by National Council for Science and Technology communication, Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India.

This program was inaugurated by the Chief GuestProf. K. L.Verma, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of Pt. RavishankarShukla University Raipur and Chairman of the inaugural session was Dr. K. Subramaniam, Director General, Chhattisgarh Council of Science & Technology. In the Inaugural Session Padmashree Dr. A.T. Dabke, Ex-Vice Chancellor, Ayush& Health University, Raipur; Mr. Anil Sharma, Retd. Chief Engineer, Chhattisgarh Environment Conservation Board,  Raipur;Dr. M. P. Thakur, Director Instructions, IGAU, Raipur; Prof. S.K. Jadhav, School of Studies in  Biotechnology, Pt. R.S.U., Raipur were present on the dais.

The inauguration started by lighting the lamp and floral tribute to goddess Saraswati after that Dr. K. Subramaniam welcomed the chief guest by honoring him with bouquet.

Dr. (Mrs.) J.K.Rai, Scientist ‘D’, CCOST welcomed all the distinguished dignitaries present on the dais and gave the brief introduction about the National Children Science Congress programme.

Dr.K. Subramaniam, IFS, Director General, Chhattisgarh Council of Science & Technology (CCOST) addressed the gathering and said that earlier Council had organised a ‘Regional Orientation Workshop for Master Resource  persons with the help of National Academic Committee Members in association with Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University, Raipur from 31st July to 2nd August 2018. In the regional workshop 06 states: Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh participated.Dr.Subramaniam focussed that different types of waste materials: hospital waste, kitchen waste and plastic waste are deteriorating our ecosystems. He directed the district coordinators to make aware the children to the ill effects of pollution in the environment and help them to ignite their mind and nurture their ideas to make innovative projects to solve societal problems, so that, children can contribute in making a healthy surrounding. He introduced the gathering to the Focal Theme ‘Science, Technology and Innovation for Clean, Green and Healthy Nation’ and the sub themes: Ecosystem and Ecosystem Services; Health, Hygiene and Sanitation; Waste to Wealth; Society, Culture and Livelihoods and Traditional Knowledge System. He suggested that the topic for the project chosen should fall within one of the sub-themes that have a direct relevance to the society and the environment.  Keeping this in mind, an apparently small yet relevant local problem should be selected and solutions may be found by using innovative ideas which should be translational and cost effective.

He intimated that four projects of National Children Science Congress from our state participated in ‘The Global Young Scientists Challenge 2018’ (International Fair 2018) organised by Indian Innovators Association from 8th to 9th September 2018 in Vishakhapatnam and won two Gold Medals and two Silver Medals. He said that we expect this year to get more Gold Medals by making quality projects. He stressed on raising the bar for quality assessment.

Padmashree Dr. A.T. Dabke, Ex-Vice Chancellor, Ayush& Health University, Raipur advised the teachers to understand the psychology of children. He said that Malnutrition and Anaemia are serious illness of children and mother in India in general and this state is particular. He focussed on the effect and solution of malnutrition and anaemia. He addressed the teachers that quite good number of projects can be prepared in this problem. He wished for the successful organization of the training programme.

Mr. Anil Sharma, Ret. Chief Engineer, Chhattisgarh Environment Conservation Board, Raipur focused on the theme ‘Science, Technology and Innovation for Clean, Green and Healthy Nation and stressed on different types of pollutions and its impact to the environment and health. He suggested  that the district coordinators and resource teachers to discuss with children about different types of wastes, its harmful effect in the environment, mechanism of its disposal and concept of Refuse,Reduce,Reuse,Recycle and Recover and guide them in preparing innovative projects relevant to the problem and its solution.

Dr. M.P. Thakur, Director Instructions, IGAU, Raipur addressed the gathering about agricultural waste and how it can be reused. He also focussed on Mushroom production technology. He said that it is a source of food, nutrition, good health and income security, which can improve economic status of the society.

Chief Guest Prof.K. L.Verma, Hon’bleVice Chancellor,Pt. RavishankarShuklaUniversity,Raipur expressed his gratitude toDr. K. Subramaniam,IFS,DirectorGeneral,CCOST,Raipur for organising the workshop in Pt. RavishankarShukla University,Raipur. He assured that Pt. RavishankarShuklaUniversity is always ready to provide help and facilities for organising any programme. He  focussed on the theme of National Children Science Congress -2018 ‘Science,Technology and Innovation for Clean,Green& Healthy Nation.  He also mentioned that it is our duty to keep our surroundingsclean and green so that we become a part of mission of “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ and directed the district coordinators to guide the children in making good innovative projects relevent to the societal problems.

The Inauguration was concluded with voteof thanks by Prof. Keshav Kant Sahu,State Academic Coordinator,National Children Science Congress.

Degree Girls College,Raipur; on the identified subthemes: Ecosystem and Ecosystem Services ; Health, Hygiene and Sanitation ;Waste to Wealth; Society ,Culture and Livelihoods;Traditional Knowledge Systems and gave ideas about how to make innovative projects according to the local societal problem and to find out its solution,

Prof. K.K. Sahu, Professor, S.O.S.in Biotechnology, Pt. RavishankarShukla University, Raipur delivered a Brief Introduction on the Focal theme,identified subthemes and focussed on Mentoring  procedure of National Children Science Congress.

Mr. M.N. Singh, Lecturer, N.H.Goel World School,Raipur gave presentation on Project Methodology, Method of Presentation,Evaluation Guidelines  and Aspects of Evaluation.

In the workshop district coordinators and guide teachers of 25 districts (approx. 54 persons) participated actively and cerificates were distributed to them.

The programme was concluded with vote of thanks by Dr D.K. Upadhyay,Principal, Govt. H.S.S., Chirmiri, Dist-Korea and District Coordinator,Dist –Korea.
